A worker from the organization presented an appeal for heavy clothing and food in preference to toys, at the Student Council meeting, Monday, December 14.
"Pleas for wearing apparel, including coats, sweaters, gloves, shoes, galoshes and underwear, are urgent and numerous," she said.
Many of the families are entirely dependent upon the Associated Charities and have been for several months. Sickness on the part of the ordinary bread-winners results in mere youngsters of 16 and 17 having to take upon their shoulders the responsibility of large families.
It is impossible to give a complete list of the homerooms which have signed up for their give-a-basket project but the family which 233 is taking was called to the reporter's attention. The father has been out of work for a half a year due to an automobile accident and his family of four are in serious need. His sister with her child has recently joined the group also.
Most of these families are the same ones to which the classes gave baskets on Thanksgiving.
Homeroom 219 plans to give a Christmas basket to a needy family. They have decided
to care for the same family they had at Thanksgiving.
