Mock election day, October 20, was a big day for President Lyndon B. Johnson at Heights.
The democratic incumbent walloped the Republican presidential nominee, Senator Barry Goldwater, 778 - 187 in the mock election.
WRITE-IN candidates included 27 votes for Adlai Stevenson, two for Nelson Rockefeller, and one vote each for Hubert Humphrey, Abraham Ribicoff, Richard Nixon, William Scranton, Robert Kennedy, George Wallace and Norman Thomas.
The seniors led the registration with 514 participants. The 10th graders were second with 469 and the juniors trailed with 461. Some 412 registrants didn't vote.
Mrs. Marvin S. Zelman, chairman of the Johnson for President campaign in the Cleveland Heights, University Heights and South Euclid areas, commented, "We find it very encouraging that high school students are taking an active interest in the election because the responsibility of the government will rest in their hands in the near future. It naturally is very gratifying that President Johnson polled so heavily. We hope this is a reflection of the vote that will appear in November."
MOCK PRESIDENTIAL elections have also been held at John Adams and Chanel high schools. Johnson polled 92.6 per cent and 73 per cent respectively. Other area high schools are planning elections in the near future.
Bernie Arons, 12B-105, head of the election committee of Student council stated, "The idea was good and we enjoyed holding the election, but we are hoping for more organization, participation and publicity in the future."
