After 20 Year Absence, NHS Returns to Heights

by Edo Serkownek

After a 20 year absence, a National Honor Society (NHS) chapter will again recognize student intelligence at Cleveland Heights High School.

In 1978, the North Central Association Evaluation Committee (NCAEC) recommended a reinstatement of the NHS at Heights. Dr. Hugh E. Burkett, Heights Administrative Principal, has implemented NCAEC's suggestion this year.

The first NHS induction will take place in the Dina Reese Evans Center for the performing arts,December 12. The induction guest speaker will be Mrs. Rena Blumberg, author, public relations director and interviewer for radio stations, WWWE and WDOK. Blumberg is a Heights graduate and a member of NHS; she is also a recent inductee in the Heights High Hall of Fame. The induction will include a candle lighting ceremony and induction speeches by the administrator and other area school NHS members.

Sixty-seven seniors qualified for candidacy for the induction ceremony and selection will be made from this group. The selected NHS members will be awarded pins, certificates of honor and membership cards which will admit them to athletic and school events. Guests at the induction will include parents, relatives invited classes, administration, faculty and members of the community.

The four requirements to become a NHS member are at least a 3.0 grade average, leadership abilities, school or community service and outstanding character traits.

Faculty and counselors will evaluate students for eligibility. Students who feel they qualify may nominate themselves by filling out a questionnaire acquired from their counselor.

The NHS Faculty Advisory Committee and counselors will be responsible for the final decision of accepting candidates. The nine member Faculty Advisory Committee includes: Chairperson and Advisor, Dr. Leatrice Rabinsky; Secretary, Mrs. Anna Marie Tabernik, and members Wayne Asamoto, Mrs. Kathy Blain, Mrs. Jacqueline A. Rollins, William Tarter, Ms. Elizabeth Russo, Edward Wagner and Micheal Wargo.
