Directions: All incoming ninth graders enrolled in English 1 Honors will read BOTH of the following two books:

  Night Wiesel, Elie
  Farewell to Manzanar Houston, Jeanne Wakatsuki
II. Required Assignment
  As you read both books, you will take notes using the English 1 Honors Graphic Organizer. This non-circular Venn diagram will encourage you to record similarities and differences between the following suggested features in the chart below.

The completed English 1 Honors graphic organizer is due Wednesday, September 2, 2009. It will be used for discussion and to complete an in-class essay during the first two weeks of September. It may also be used in formal debate
   
  Use the English 1 Honors Graphic Organizer Venn diagram to chart similarities and differences between the two books. Consider the items listed below.

In addition to the mandatory reading selection, students are encouraged to monitor their self selected reading over the summer months. Use the Self Selected Reading Graphic Organizer. For each reading selection, complete a graphic organizer, answer the questions and complete the box at the bottom for one new vocabulary word. Each completed graphic organizer will serve as a separate entry in a “Summer Reading Drawing” that will be held on Friday, September 4, 2009.
