  A. The First Part Last Reader's Response Questions.

Please select five of the following prompts and compose at least one well developed paragraph consisting of a main idea or topic sentence and several, detailed supporting sentences for each prompt. These responses should reflect careful thought and use evidence from the novel to support and develop your observations.
    1. What is the theme of the book? How does Johnson develop this theme?
    2. Describe the place Nia lives. What does the place where she lives tell us about her character and upbringing?
    3. In whose point of view or voice is the story? How would the story be more effective or less effective or different if it were told from another character’s point of view?
    4. Which character would you remove from the book and why? How would removing this character change the novel?
    5. What are two activities that Bobby does before the baby comes and two activities that he needs to do after the baby comes? What is his attitude toward the change in activities?
    6. What senses (sight, smell, hearing, touch or taste) does Angela Johnson use to describe the setting of the story? (Give at least three examples.)
    7. After the baby is born, Bobby has to choose whether to keep the baby or to give the baby up for adoption. Why does Bobby make the choice that he does? What do you think of his decision?
    8. Describe the scene when Nia and Bobby tell their parents about the pregnancy. Is the scene believable and realistic? Relate this scene to your life or to a scene in a book you have read or a movie you have seen.

  B. The Secret Life of Bees Reader’s Response Questions

Please select five of the following prompts and compose at least one well developed paragraph consisting of a main idea or topic sentence and several, detailed supporting sentences for each prompt. These responses should reflect careful thought and use evidence from the novel to support and develop your observations.
    1. Describe Lily’s pathway to understanding her own prejudices regarding African- Americans. How are her ideas formed? How are they brought to light in the novel?
    2. How do the women in the novel look after and support each other?
    3. Lily uses reading and the power of storytelling to escape. She dreams of being a writer. What role does storytelling play in your life?
    4. Each of the novel’s fourteen chapters is kicked off with a quotation about bees. Select a few of these introductory quotations and explain how they relate to events or characters within the chapter. Think about why author Sue Monk Kidd positioned each particular quote in its designated spot.
    5. A symbol is an object that a writer uses to stand for something other than itself and to relay an additional level of meaning. What do the bees stand for or symbolize in this novel? What life lessons do the bees teach?
    6. How important are mothers in this novel? What role do mothers play in the lives of this collection of characters? How does the absence of a mother affect Lily?
    7. Discuss your favorite character from this novel. Can you relate to this character? What lessons did you learn from reading about this character? In what ways did this character stand out for you and seem realistic?

III. In addition to the mandatory reading selection, students are encouraged to monitor their self selected reading over the summer months. Use the Self Selected Reading Graphic Organizer. For each reading selection, complete a graphic organizer, answer the questions and complete the box at the bottom for one new vocabulary word. Each completed graphic organizer will serve as a separate entry in a “Summer Reading Drawing” that will be held on Friday, September 4, 2009.
