Entry Year Program

The CH-UH Entry Year Program officially began in 2001. Pursuant to State regulations, all beginning teachers and administrators must successfully complete an Entry Year Program in order to be eligible to transition to a professional license via the Ohio Department of Education. Mentor teachers receive training in how to support beginning teachers through a framework called Pathwise. The Pathwise Observation System was developed by Educational Testing Service to serve as a framework for mentor teachers to provide both feedback and support. In addition to the Pathwise component of the program, mentors and entry year teachers participate in an induction program throughout the year. This program provides seminar topics and activities that support and encourage the professional development of both mentors and entry year teachers. Topics include Differentiated Instruction, Qualities of Effective Instruction, Classroom Instruction that Works, Classroom Management that Works, PRAXIS preparation, to name a few. In addition to workshops entry year teachers receive books throughout the year that support the workshops as well as contribute to their Professional Library.

The Ohio Department of Education works collaboratively with District administration to assign a mentor for new administrators. Program requirements for entry year administrators are dictated by State regulations and may be fulfilled via program options outlined via the State Department. Program options have been developed in cooperation with the Ohio Association of Secondary Administrators (OASSA), the Ohio Association of Elementary School Administrators (OAESA), and/or the Ohio Department of Education.

The Local Professional Development Committee (LPDC) oversees the Entry Year Program for teachers. Mentors are facilitated and/or coached by a lead mentor. The lead mentor, who is also a member of the LPDC, is responsible for the planning and implementation of the program, as well as the workshops, and reports directly to the Director of Human Resources and the LPDC. Entry Year Workshops are held monthly for both mentors and Entry Year Teachers. In addition, mentors and entry year teachers are eligible for release from their classrooms for nine (9) one-half ( 1/2) days to complete program requirements. Two formal Pathwise observations must be completed before the Entry Year Teacher is formally assessed in Praxis III via the Ohio Department of Education.

Entry-year administrators are assessed pursuant to the program requirements elected for profession license upgrade.
