Pilot Teacher Evaluation System

The Administration and Union have collaborated for the last year via Summit and Negotiations to create a new Teacher Evaluation System. This assessment tool will be required for all new teachers and available to other limited or continuing contract teachers on a voluntary limited basis.

Our pilot evaluation system is based upon the research that has been conducted by Charlotte Danielson. The framework we have developed identifies those aspects of a teacher’s responsibilities that have been documented as promoting student learning and best practices amongst teachers. In this framework, teaching is divided into twenty-three components clustered into four domains of teaching responsibility: planning and preparation (Domain 1), classroom environment (Domain 2), instruction (Domain 3), and professional responsibilities (Domain 4). The framework complements the Pathwise and Praxis III assessment systems.

This framework for professional practice can be used for a wide range of purposes, from meeting novices’ needs to enhancing veterans’ skills. Because teaching is complex, it is helpful to have a roadmap (rubric) structured around a shared understanding of teaching. We believe this tool will recognize the varying stages of professional practice of our staff.
