The Coach's Award for the MVP of the cheerleading squad has been renamed The D’Angela McLaurin Award. The award is presented in June, at the 8th grade recognition ceremony. This was done in honor of Miss D’Angela (Dee Dee) McLaurin who was taken from us on April 11, 2001. She was an awesome wonder! She was filled with compassion, had tremendous energy, loved mankind and hated injustice.
In September of 1999, D'Angela started a petition at Roxboro Middle School to start a cheerleading squad. She didn't understand why there wasn't one, especially since she wanted to cheer. With her persuasive nature, she convinced the current advisor, Ms. McCoy, to take on the task of selecting and coaching a cheerleading squad.
D'Angela tried out, and was named captain of the squad. She contributed over half of the cheers for our squad. She was always making up new steps and routines. She participated in everything the squad did as a team, including performing at the Gund Arena with the Cavs Dance Team in April, 2000. She was a true athlete and definitely an outstanding cheerleader. After leaving Roxboro, D'Angela attended Heights High School, where she became a member of their cheerleading squad.
Thanks to D'Angela, Roxboro's cheerleading squad continues to grow and get
better each year.
