The Cleveland Heights
High Band was organized during the school year of 1928-29 when
Mr. Ernest Bowdenweber was assigned to Cleveland Heights on a
half-day basis to organize the Concert and Marching Bands.
In September of 1929, Mark Hindsley took the reins of the band
on a full-time basis. It was under his direction that the band
grew from its humble beginnings to achieve national renown. As
early as 1931, the band had gained the reputation of being one
of the foremost bands in this part of the country.
The Heights Band, under Mr. Hindsleys direction, and later
under Mr. Ralph Rush, entered national contests and consistently
brought home superior ratings. In addition, the group played at
National Educators conventions, NEOTA regional conventions
and was once presented on a national radio broadcast over NBC
radio.
The bands tradition of excellence has continued and expanded
into a vibrant and vital program encompassing over 200 students
in three groups: Symphonic Winds, Symphonic Band and Concert Band.
In addition, a Marching Band, Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo round
out the total band experience.
For more than 60 years, the Symphony and Symphonic Winds have
toured on alternate years to many parts of the United States and
Canada. They have also performed with many great artists and clinicians
including William Revelli, Rafael Mendez, Roy Burns, Edwin Franko
Goldman and Morton Gould. Brett Baker has been the director since
2001.
