advantages to participation:
• These summer opportunities provide challenging,
enriching, and engaging coursework of interest to gifted students.
•
There is NO TUITION for these programs – only a minimal cost may be
incurred for residential options.
•
Participation in the Summer Honors Institute provides students with an early
opportunity to attend courses on a college/university campus and is a wonderful
addition to a student’s college/university application.
• This experience offers students the opportunity to meet other identified
gifted high school students from across the state.

The Jack Kent Cooke Young Scholar's Program
The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation is a non-profit organization, that has made
a commitment to helping young people of exceptional promise reach their full
potential
through
education.
To fulfill
its mission, the Foundation identifies and supports young people of exceptional
promise, application, deportment, and character who have financial need and
demonstrated excellence in academic endeavors and extracurricular activities.
Through the Young Scholars Program, the Foundation selects high-achieving
youth with financial need and provides them throughout high school with individualized
educational opportunities and support that will enable them to develop their
talents and abilities.
Previous Young Scholars have received the support
and guidance required to:
•
evaluate the suitability of their high school environment,
•
supplement their schooling with online courses,
•
select and attend summer academic or enrichment programs,
•
obtain computers, software, or other learning technology,
•
improve their musical, artistic, scientific, mathematical, or other skills,
•
benefit from the nationwide network of Young Scholars,
•
explore their career goals, and
•
select the college best- suited to their talents and ambitions.
The Foundation awards scholarships that total as much as $50,000 per year,
and receives approximately 1,000 nominations for each program, making them
among the largest and most competitive scholarships in the country. The Foundation
reviews each application individually, with the assistance of a panel of
national experts. The Foundation selects Young Scholars using the criteria
below. While all of these criteria are important, the Foundation pays particular
attention to the first two.
• Academic achievement and intelligence: Strong academic record (including
grades and achievement tests), academic awards and honors, and a substantive
assessment by a teacher providing a confidential letter of recommendation.
• Unmet financial need: Limited family income and insufficient funds to
cover most or all educational-related expenses. The average family income of
previous
classes of Young Scholars has been $35,000. While there are no absolute
income limits, no student with a family income above $85,000 has yet been selected
as a Young Scholar. Our evaluation of available family financial support
considers family income and factors such as number of siblings, extraordinary
family medical expenses, number of siblings already in college, and the
high
cost of living in some areas.
• Will to succeed: Determination and perseverance in the face of challenges,
and success in other pursuits.
• Leadership and public service: Initiative on behalf of others, such as
participation in volunteer, community, and school-related activities.
• Critical-thinking ability: Answers to application questions that demonstrate
critical-thinking.
• Appreciation for or participation in the arts and humanities: Appreciation
of, involvement in, or study of music, art, literature, or similar fields.
If you wish to have your 7th grade gifted child apply for this program,
application materials may now be accessed via the Internet at: http://www.jackkentcookefoundation.org/jkcf_web/content.aspx?page=2293293 and
must be submitted to the Foundation no later than May of the 7th grade year.
$1,000 "Road" Scholarships
The School Youth Travel Association Foundation

the cost of an educational trip sponsored by a school or other type of
youth group. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis, 5 times per
year, and must include a nomination by a teacher or other adult group leader.
